Your wedding dance is one of the most unforgettable highlights of your special day. It's your chance to bond with your partner while dazzling your guests with moves they didn't even know you had!
It provides an excellent chance to connect with your partner and entertain your guests. However, many couples encounter common issues that can turn this special moment into an awkward or stressful experience. Avoiding these mistakes will allow you to enjoy your dance with confidence and ease.

1. Waiting Until the Last Minute to
Practice Your Wedding Dance
Consistent, daily, little practice between wedding dance lessons is by far better than trying to grasp all last minute before your wedding day. At the end of each session, we record a video on your device to help you remember all the steps. Repetition is key and it will make you feel so much better on your big day
2. Choosing a Wedding Dance Song That’s Too Difficult
Picking a song with a complicated rhythm or tempo can make dancing stressful. Select a song that matches your skill level, dance style you are looking for and therefore works best. If you need help with choosing a song, please make a playlist of a few options, book a free wedding dance consultation and then ask the teacher. Book a free consultation at the dance studio here:
3. Ignoring Your Partner’s Comfort Zone
Not everyone feels comfortable with the same dance style. One partner might prefer slow dancing while the other wants something more energetic. Discuss your preferences openly and find a middle ground that suits both personalities.
4. Forgetting to Coordinate Your Wedding Outfit
Heavy dresses, long trains, tight fitted, or high heels can limit your movement. Practice your dance in your wedding shoes when the choreography is finished (unless it's just one lesson), and attire, dress or something similar to avoid surprises. This helps you adjust your steps and avoid tripping. In addition, if you have long sleeves, please check that you can fully lift up your arms. I have had several students in the past where the choreography had to be changed, last minute as they couldn't lift their arms up further than maybe 90 degrees!
5. Overlooking the Importance of Posture
Good posture enhances your presence and balance. Stand tall with shoulders back and engage your core. It will immediately make your dance look and feel so much easier and look so much better! In addition, it will enable you to dance well to fast music, if you choose an upbeat song.
6. Forgetting to Smile and Enjoy the Moment
Most importantly!!! Concentrating excessively on perfecting each step can cause your dance to appear rigid or tense. That's why we suggest practicing a bit every day between lessons. This way, you can avoid feeling anxious and stressed about your performance and truly enjoy dancing. True enjoyment makes your dance more memorable and heartfelt.
7. Not Considering the Dance Floor Size
A crowded or small dance floor can restrict your movements. Be sure to assess the venue’s dance area and the size of the floor in advance. This allows your wedding dance instructor to adjust your choreography to suit the space. If the floor is limited, steer clear of wide or fast moves.
8. Forgetting to Practice with Your Wedding Shoes
Dancing in unfamiliar shoes can cause discomfort or slips. Practice wearing your wedding dance shoes and show them to your teacher who can give you advise which shoes to avoid. This also reduces the risk of accidents during the dance.
9. Not Planning for the Unexpected First Dance Mistake
Sometimes things don't go as expected—a skipped step or an unexpected music change. Mentally prepare to remain calm and continue dancing. Keep in mind that your guests aren't familiar with your choreography, and with a swift recovery, they likely won't even notice (only your dance teacher will) 😜🙂
Length of First Dance
2 to 2.5 minutes is ideal.
While you're in the spotlight, 4 minutes might seem unexpectedly lengthy and possibly uncomfortable. A good suggestion is to invite the guests to join you on the dance floor, or we can edit and shorten your song at no additional charge.
11. Neglecting to Consult a Professional for Dips and Lifts
Prevent injuries and ensure your dips and lifts are performed safely and gracefully by learning the proper techniques from an experienced, high-level dance instructor. You wouldn't want to ruin your honeymoon with a sore back or shoulder. While not essential, dips and lifts are always a hit with the audience and can enhance the excitement of your wedding party.
Conclusion
Your wedding dance should be a joyful celebration of your relationship. Avoiding these common mistakes will help you feel confident and relaxed.
Start early, keep it simple, focus and enjoy the moment together.
When you do, your dance will be a beautiful memory that lasts a lifetime.
